Antiques expert launches consultancy

A former valuer with the north Yorkshire auctioneers Tennants has set up an independent antiques and fine art consultancy.

Antique valuer Mark LittlerMark Littler’s innovative approach will see him divide collections among the auction houses best suited to sell them – rather than place the entire ‘pot’ in one saleroom.

He said: “Some auctioneers have a reputation for certain items, whether it’s ‘Mouseman’ furniture or ceramics. By splitting collections I hope to make sure items reach their true potential.”

Mark, who has a decade of experience in the antiques trade, will operate the new business from a base in Sandbach, Cheshire.

The service will be offered at no charge to clients, but will incur an introductory commission fee from the salerooms, Mark added.

While at Tennants in Leyburn, where his specialisms included silver as well as wine and whisky, he valued and sold an 18th-century silver epergne by Thomas Pitts for £84,000 (inclusive) in 2014.
