Beatles hair sells for thousands

The Beatles get their hair cutFour locks of hair that were cut from the famous mop top heads of The Beatles recently sold for a hair-raising $10,360 (£8070) via online auction house Catawiki. The sale set a new record for the sale of hair at auction.

Back in 1964, John O’Gorman was given the task of cutting The Beatles’ famous hair while working for hair and make-up on the set of the A Hard Days Night film. After cutting the hair, O’Gorman kept some of the locks, giving some away to friends and selling others to fans.

Last month, Catawiki sold Paul McCartney’s hair for around $3 000 (£2,336), whilst both George Harrison and Ringo Starr’s locks sold for $115 (£90) each, with Lennon’s hair selling just short of $1,425 (£1,110). Danny Hoekstra, Catawiki’s Beatles expert, said, “[The hair] is a very special collectible item and it has proven provenance. Generally, celebrity hair will only increase in value in the future and is therefore a very good investment.”

An Australian bidder bought Paul McCartney’s hair, whilst a bidder from France bought both George Harrison and Ringo Starr’s locks. John Lennon’s hair went to a bidder in Austria.
