Bidding war for Picasso plate

An anonymous seller in Glasgow was over the moon when their Picasso painted plate became the subject of a bidding war at a Glasgow auction house, eventually selling for £4,300.

Marked number 47 in a limited run of 150, the illustrated ceramic plate was one of the top lots in McTear’s recent British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction.

The Picasso plate that sold for £4300Produced in France in 1963 and titled ‘Visage’, the white earthenware ceramic piece shows an image of a face painted in Pablo Picasso’s trademark Cubist style. The plate was bought by an anonymous collector.

Commenting on the lot, Brian Clements from McTear’s, said, “Simply put Picasso is one of the greatest and most influential artists to have ever lived. The limited edition plate features an unmistakable Picasso image and we knew we had something quite special when it arrived at McTear’s. There was a lot of interest in the piece and we are delighted with the priced achieved.”

Spanish born artist, Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Amongst his many achievements are co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture and the co-invention of collage.  His works feature in many of the world’s most prestigious galleries.
