Gainsborough Sketch at Bainbridge’s

GainsboroughSketchBainbridge’s of Ruislip have a chalk and gouache drawing attributed to 18th Century portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough in their July sale.

The presentation sketch, entitled ‘Gypsy Encampment, Sunset’, will be offered as a fully authenticated sale. The reverse has an inscription stating that it was given by Gainsborough to the portrait miniature painter Ozias Humphry. It was later passed to Humphry’s son, William Upcott who was an avid collector of Gainsborough drawings. Upon his death, the drawing passed to Upcott’s friend, Charles Hampden Turner where it descended through his family until being offer for auction by the vendor.

The drawing measures 22.5cm x 32.2cm and no estimate has currently been set. The sale takes place on July 2nd.
