Inaugural British Impressionism sale success

John Singer Sargent’s Girl reading by a streamThe inaugural sale of British impressionist artworks at Christie’s achieved a combined total of almost £6 million recently.

The British Impressionism auction achieved £5,947,875, with John Singer Sargent’s Girl reading by a stream commanding the highest sale price of £1,208,750, followed up by The White Canoe by Sir Alfred James Munnings, P.R.A., R.W.S, which sold for £728,750.

Elsewhere, the sale saw a world auction record set for Charles Wellington Furse’s Work with York and Ainsty – The Children of Mr Edward Lycett Green, MFH, which sold for £668,750. The price was over 30 times the previous auction record for a work by the artist.

The Beach at Runswick Bay by Mark Senior – £37,500
The Bridge at Argenteuil by Stafford Llewellyn Leake – £32,500
St Ives by John Anthony Park – £27,500
