Magic carpet flies at Chaterhouse

a Kazak rugA little carpet made a big price in the Charterhouse two-day auction in May, when it flew away selling for £2,000.

“In the property world it is location, location, location, but in the antiques world it tends to be condition, condition and condition.” Commented Richard Bromell. “As this little rug, which measured just 3 ½ x 2 ½ feet, was thread bare in parts, split, torn and with a few old repair patches let into it, we put a pre-sale estimate of just under £100. It is just the sort of rug that could have easily been thrown out or maybe even cut up to make cushion covers, or even put on top of the compost heap, but the owner, who lives near Salisbury, thought enough of it to bring it to our salerooms to sell it.”

On the sale day, this little rug was in good company with many other rugs and carpets, in all shapes, sizes and colours. The auction was particularly well viewed with specialist buyers from London making the trip to Sherborne. However, on the day, it was buyers bidding live on the internet that produced heated bidding action with the hammer falling at £2,000, much to the surprise of many bidders in the saleroom.
