Modern designs at Chorley’s

Gloucestershire auction house Chorley’s is continuing its recent departure from purely antiques auctions to hold another Modern Art & Design two-day sale this month.

The sale will include items ranging from paintings to light fittings, and designers from Linley to Boucheron, alongside celebrated names in contemporary art.

Some of the forthcoming sale’s highlights include:

A selection of furniture and items by Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson including a book trough (estimate £250-£300) and a tray (estimate £150-£200).

A chair and footstool designed by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman MillerA chair and footstool designed by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller (estimate £400-£600).

a jar and cover by Michael CassonStudio pottery and art glass, including a jar and cover by Michael Casson (estimate £300-£300) and a Bernard Moore dish decorated with fish on a flambé ground (estimate £150-£200).

A pick of the prints ranges from a linocut depicting St James’s Palace by Edward Bawden (1903-1989) woyj am estimate of £600-£800; a Damien Hirst skull motifs (estimate £1,000-1,500); and Mickey and Minnie by the French born street artist Mr Brainwash (estimate £3,000-5,000).

Mr Brainwash's 'Mickey and Minnie'Oil paintings include a roll call of Modern British artists, including Joan Eardley’s brightly coloured work depicting a woman with a dog outside a cottage door (estimate £30,000-35,000).

Christopher Wood (British 1901-1930) Tulips & Hyacinths,A group of four paintings from a private collection is the highlight of the sale, including a still life, Tulips & Hyacinths, by the artist Christopher Wood (1901-1930) with an estimate of £40,000-£60,000). The other three pictures from this collection are by Augustus John, James Dickson Innes and Derwent Lees.

A selection of modern design jewellery adds some sparkle to the sale, from a Georg Jensen silver necklace and earrings in the Tulip pattern, (estimate £400-£600) to a stylized tiger’s eye and textured gold pendant by Kutchinsky at £1,800-2,200.

The sale takes place on 22nd and 23rd November.
