Rare royal chocolate could tempt bidders
A commemorative tin made to celebrate the Coronation of George the Sixth in 1937 was brought to Hansons‘ valuer Edward Rycroft at a recent valuation day at the Derbyshire auctioneers.
The tin was originally presented by Bolton Education Committee, most probably to the schoolchildren of the borough, and contained a large bar of Rowntree’s chocolate. The tins are not rare but, astonishingly, the example brought to the saleroom still contained the whole bar of chocolate, wrapped in its original silver foil.
Edward said, “We handle rare and unusual items on a daily basis but are still often surprised by objects brought to us. Who would have thought that no-one would give in to the temptation to eat the chocolate? It may be well past its sell-by date now but we are certain there will be an appetite for this in the saleroom!”
For both collectors of royal memorabilia and lovers of chocolate, the tin is being offered in Hansons May Antique & Collectors auction on Thursday 19th May with a guide of £60-£100.
