Rare Russian ballet costume at Harrogate fair
It graced the stage as part of the performance of Scheherazade by the world famous Ballet Russes in Paris in 1910, now an extremely rare antique Russian ballet costume is set to sell at an antiques fair in Harrogate later this month.
The costume featured in Sergei Diaghilev’s production and was designed by Leon Baskt (1866-1924).
Described as ‘in good condition’, the costume belongs to Ruth Cope from Granta Fine Art in Cambridge, an exhibitor at The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair from January 26-28.
It has been in her personal collection for many years and was verified by Sotheby’s in 1999. Now it is on sale for £18,500. Ruth said, “This is an important piece of Russian and French ballet history from Diaghilev and is sure to appeal to collectors around the world.”
