Rare Russian ballet costume at Harrogate fair

Antique Russian ballet costume from Ballet Russes ScheherazadeIt graced the stage as part of the performance of Scheherazade by the world famous Ballet Russes in Paris in 1910, now an extremely rare antique Russian ballet costume is set to sell at an antiques fair in Harrogate later this month.

The costume featured in Sergei Diaghilev’s production and was designed by Leon Baskt (1866-1924).

Described as ‘in good condition’, the costume belongs to Ruth Cope from Granta Fine Art in Cambridge, an exhibitor at The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair from January 26-28.

It has been in her personal collection for many years and was verified by Sotheby’s in 1999. Now it is on sale for £18,500. Ruth said, “This is an important piece of Russian and French ballet history from Diaghilev and is sure to appeal to collectors around the world.”

Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1979) is one of the most famous names in the history of ballet.

He was a well-known Russian art critic, patron, ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes.

Harrogate fair

The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair features 40 dealers offering a wide range of antiques and art, including Georgian and Victorian dining furniture, Edwardian leather settees, silver candelabra and English Studio pottery.

There will also be arts & crafts, Art Deco vases and Art Nouveau bronze sculpture.
