Successful sale of 20th Century and Contemporary Art at Chiswick

Chiswick Auctions recently held a successful sale of 20th Century and Contemporary Art and Design, with over 300 lots delivering a total hammer price of over £75,000 (including buyer’s premium).

Tudric Liberty & Co. Art Nouveau clockSome of the star lots at the sale included a Tudric Liberty & Co. Art Nouveau clock made from pewter with mother of pearl inlay and copper face, stamped ‘Tudric 0290’, which sold for £5,520. A rare German Meissen Jungendstill period porcelain vase (circa 1900) sold for £1,680.

Georg Jensen silverThe auction house said silver performed well at the sale with a collection of Georg Jensen pieces proving to be in great demand.  A stunning silver christening bowl, stamped 925 with makers marks, boxed, 17.5cm diameter sold for £384. A ‘KAKTUS’ pattern sterling silver cutlery canteen sold for £3,000. A silver bowl No. 775, designed by Harold Nielsen achieved £1,560, along with a ‘Bernadotte’ cutlery selection selling for £1,440.

Danish teak dining table and chairsA number of furniture lots also sold well with standout pieces including a large M ahogany Thebes Stool by Liberty & Co selling for £1,140. An early 20th Century Arts and Crafts Shapland & Petter Hall Stand retailed by Liberty sold for £960; along with a 1960s’ Danish teak dining table and 6 chairs which sold for £1,440.

screen-print by Alexander Calder From the contemporary art section, a screen-pr int by Alexander Calder (1889-1976) Birds In Flight achieved £2,160. Sculptures proved a popular purchase with two stone sculptures by Eric Stanford The Colossus of Menmon and Female Torso achieving £1,320 and £1,680 respectively, along with an After Harry Moor bronze achieving £1,200.
