Three private estates in North Yorkshire country house auction

A sale of items from three private estates is set to offer “traditional and affordable” antiques, art and furniture in the saleroom of North Yorkshire auction house Tennants Auctioneers’ two-day Country House sale later this month.

The auction house said the 1400-lot sale offers “an appealing mix of good period furniture, paintings, Asian and European ceramics, clocks, silver and more”.

A pair of antique giltwood chairs in the Louis VXI styleAll of the items have been sourced from private properties in the north of England, such as Rudd Hall in Richmond, Middleton House, Middleton Tyas; and Dinckley Hall in Lancashire.

One of the highlights of the auction is a pair of 19th century giltwood fauteuils in the Louis XVI style, carrying an estimate of £300 to £500.

Tennants said that collectors of arcane ephemera and quirky decorative objects will find much of interest, with highlights including an unusual 19th-century pair of miniature Bohemian glass scent bottles, housed inside a wooded box carved in the form of a travelling trunk (estimate of £350-450). Other novel items in the sale include a 19th- century black silk top hat, with wax seals to the inside, which once belonged to a student at Eton College. The hat belonged to a member of ‘Pop’ the Eton Society akin to Prefects, who would decorate their top hats and the insides of their tail coats with wax seals impressed with “POP” (estimate of £80-120).

The sale also offers a good range of jewellery and watches, including a particularly pretty selection of Victorian and Edwardian seed pearl jewellery. Often found in period jewellery, seed pearls were sometimes used in mourning or bridal jewellery, intricately wrought into detailed designs. Highlights include a seed pearl owl and crescent moon brooch with an estimate of £200-300 and a seed pearl ring modelled as a bunch of grapes on a vine.

The sale takes place on January 19 and 20.
