Silver toilet service sells for £1.5m at Olympia!

As John Andrews highlighted in his editorial, June is a month during which ‘distinguished fairs float at levels more elevated than those achieved during the rest of the year.’ This point was reinforced last week at Olympia, where a 32-piece toilet service by Benjamin Pyne of London, commissioned in 1708, sold for £1.5 million.

Bought by a private overseas buyer, the toilet service first belonged to the wife of the 8th Duke of Norfolk,  Thomas Howard. John Hawkins, who sold the set, commented that ‘a case could be made for this being the most important surviving complete suite of fully documented Queen Anne silver made by an English silversmith.’

For those who missed Olympia International Fine Art & Antiques Fair or Art & Antiques London, there is still a chance to attend the renowned London Masterpiece Fair, which starts on the 28th of this month, and runs until the 4th July. Also spanning the end of June and the first week of July are Master Drawings London and Master Paintings Week. More information can be found at the following links:

It is very reassuring to see that investing is Fine Silver can be so rewarding. It is a shame it had to leave the UK.
