Trio of Lucy Rie classics in sale

Lucy Rie Stoneware vaseWorks by the doyenne of 20th century British studio ceramics, Dame Lucy Rie will take top billing at John Nicholson’s Fine Antique Auction in Fernhurst next month.

Lucy Rie bowlThe Austrian-born potter, who made her life and career in the same Paddington studio from the outbreak of the Second World War until her death, has been feted across the world. Her work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as the V&A in London, and she remains one of the most collectable modern potters today.

John Nicholson’s sale features three classics of her style, a bowl and two vases. The best of the three is a 10in (25cm) high stoneware vase with manganese glaze, pitched at £5,000-7,000. A speckled pottery vase with volcanic glaze, standing 11½in (29cm) high, carries hopes of £4,000-6,000, while the 8½in (22cm) diameter footed circular bowl with volcanic glaze is estimated at £3,000-4,000

The sale takes place on October 8th.
