Turkish carpet flies at Halls’ auction
A carpet, which had been stored in a garage for 10 years, sold for four times its estimate at the Charterhouse auction in Sherborne on Friday 24th July.
“The owner inherited the carpet and house from a close family member. As a relatively modern property, the carpet did not sit well in rooms with fitted carpets, so was somewhat redundant. In addition, the carpet was worn, cut and stained.” Commented Richard Bromell. “This combined with the rather unusual green coloured ground and a pink border resulted in it being relegated to the garage for a decade rolled up in a plastic sheet!”
Make in Ushak, Western Turkey, the carpet was estimated at £500-1,000 and there was plenty of pre-sale interest at the Charterhouse auction. With bidders in the auction room, a bank of telephone bidder and clients bidding live online during the sale, the bidding opened at £500 and quickly rose to £3,200 when the hammer came down. This was much to the delight of the owner who attached little value to the old carpet and was looking to generate space in his garage.
