A unique WWI scrapbook containing extracts of the day-to-day life of a young nurse named Violet Gossett has sold for an impressive £2,600 at Hansons in Derbyshire.

Adrian Stevenson with scrapbook buyer Yvonne ClayThe personal and poignant account of nurse Gossett’s experience of serving as a nurse in France during WWI was bought by local genealogist Yvonne Clay, who fought off strong competition from buyers worldwide.

International clients as far as Asia left generous commission bids, as well as a number of national institutions who all expressed interest in the rare nurses diary. The atmosphere was tense after the price soared past £2000 and it was a room bidder’s offer of £2,600 that secured the winning bid.

Staffordshire genealogist, Yvonne Clay, was thrilled to be taking home this first-hand account of the atrocities of WWI, in the hope to delve deeper into the life and family history of Miss Gossett.

Hansons’ Militaria consultant Adrian Stevenson commented, “I thought it may just break the £2000 barrier, but never did I imagine it would sell for £2,600. I’m really pleased it went to a local lady who is passionate and interested in finding out more about Miss Gossett and her life family tree.”
